Safeland - how I became an office octopus

How do you catch two fish with one hook and deliver results at the speed of light? You have no choice but to become an office octopus.

In this exciting and challenging project I got to put on the hats of a UX researcher, UX and UI designer, project manager, tester, while acting as a missing link between the stakeholders and the development team.

Catching two fish with one hook

While the company already had a client base, happily using the existing app (a tool for creating communities and notifying other members in case of emergency or need for help), they needed to integrate the existing service with a new one (management of home alarm systems and notification of other users chosen by the alarm system owner).

The task

The goal was to design new functionality, while keeping and reusing the already existing as much as possible. First I focused on understanding the new business needs as well as the existing functions, then I made a lo-fi prototype of the new parts, tested it with users, and proceeded to designing a hi-fi prototype and synthesising a design system. One of the challenges was the tight deadline I was given so I had to prioritise correctly in order to focus my energy on the new functionality, but also adjust the old one so that it would make sense in the new context. When the app was developed I also acted as a tester, making sure the app looked and worked as designed.
